Cost saving tips
for airline travel:
1. Find a good travel agent
and let them know you are very price conscientious. Let them
know if you are willing to fly out of different cities than the
one you live in, if it means substantial savings. Request them
to check the rates from nearby cities when you call.
2. It is sometimes cheeper
to book round trip tickets for three leg trips.
3. Use the internet for cheeper
fares. But, call the cheeper airline carriers for the areas you
are traveling before booking a ticket. Ask them about cheeper
fares that may be available and what the restrictions are, if
your schedule is flexible.
4. Use your travel agent to
find out what airports within a city, offer the most competitive
prices for the area's you are traveling too. This is very difficult
to know and check when you are booking online.
5. There are two classifications
for tickets, regarding refund or exchange. There is a refundable
ticket or a non-refundable ticket. Below is a description of
standard airline industry classification:
Refundable These tickets are typically more expensive. You can
change plans and not pay any fees. Flights on Tuesday, Wednesday
or Thursday are typically not cheaper, because of there high
price. Some flights are automatically refundable, because of
there high prices. But, you may want to make sure you are getting
a refundable ticket if you are unsure of your plans.
Non-refundable These tickets are the ones that are typically
discounted. They can change your plans, but you must pay a fee
(usually $75-$150) plus the current price of the ticket. Sometimes
the fair classification will give you a cheeper rate, for the
current price of the ticket. This fee is an industry standard.
If you change your plans and pay this fee, your new ticket will
also be non-refundable. If you do not use a flight, the value
of the ticket, less the change fee, can only be applied toward
another ticket within one year. Also, the value of a non-refundable
ticket can only be applied toward another non-refundable ticket
(discounted / purchased early). In other words, it can not be
applied to a refundable ticket (full fair / ticket purchased
at the last minute).
6. If you miss your flight,
you can fly stand by with no additional charges. If you pay the
change fee, you will be guaranteed a seat. You will not be charged
any more than the change fee, unless you can not get a flight
until the next day.
7. If you want to leave on
an earlier flight, the same rules apply as #6, above. Leaving
a day early will cost you the change fee, plus the current price
of the ticket (may depending on the type of fare or ticket classification).
8. Call the airline toll free
numbers to see if your plane is delayed for any reason, especially
if there is bad weather. They will usually call if they know
it is going to be canceled, if it is far enough in advance. Weigh these
facts when deciding on a type of ticket and the associated price.
9. Some travel agents will
not check charter flights unless they are specifically asked
to. Charter flights can, in some cases, offer a cheaper price
than a flight with a change-over. Some travel agents do not have
access to all airlines or to discount airlines.
Tips for getting home quickly
from a delayed trip:
1. If there are weather delays
for the rout you have booked, consider traveling to a city near
your destination and renting a car one-way. Sometimes they will
not rent you a car one-way at the counter, but you can through
there toll free reservations.
2. Consider taking other forms
of transportation (bus, train, etc), if there are going to be
long weather delays. You may be delayed longer than you think.
The airlines do not add flights, to make up for ones that were
canceled. So, people that were delayed earlier than you, may
have taken up all the flights for the rest of the day, or even
into the next day.
3. If your flight schedule
needs to change for any reason, do it as soon as possible. Use
the airline toll free numbers to make changes. Do not wait in
line at a counter, because you may loose a seat.
